January 2010
The Huntingtown High School Media Center rang in the New Year with a recreation of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 by our tenth grade AP U.S. History students. Over 150 students researched and recreated booths of the Chicago World’s Fair for visiting teachers, students, and members of the community. What a way to ring in 2010!
Other social studies classes frequented the media center in January, too. Ms. Dawes, Mr. Cunningham, and Ms. Williams simulated campaigning and voting with a “Face of the Social Studies Department” election. Students voted online using electronic ballots in the media lab. Ms. Whalen’s tenth and eleventh grade classes created digital posters using Glogster to review for their midterm exams. Honors students (Cunningham, Moreland, and McGowan) researched history fair topics in the media center. It was fun exploring the website creation tool, Weebly, with Mr. Moreland’s students to create National History Day websites.
The English Department utilized the media center for several projects this month. Ms. White’s eleventh grade students researched American authors, while Ms. Turner’s tenth graders explored literary criticism related to Julius Caesar. Freshmen English students accessed subscription databases and organized ideas with Inspiration software for a year search project (Mullins), Night projects (Gibson), and controversial issues (Mullins). Ms. Cain’s first period senior English students used print and non-print sources to research various topics related to Ancient Rome, while Ms. Devey and Ms. Wood created a variety of project choices for seniors researching Macbeth in the library.
A popular trend at HHS right now is using Glogster to create digital posters. After learning about this new Web 2.0 tool through professional development opportunities, many teachers brought classes to the media center to work on Glogs. Science classes (Bloom, Rigney, Farrell, Wallace) created fantastic glogs! Other teachers who got into glogging this month included Ms. Soroka, Mr. Sammons, Ms. Whalen, and Ms. Wood. Glog on, Hurricanes!!!
The HHS Media Center hosted ASVAB presentations for the Guidance Department as well as countywide training for media specialists and guidance counselors on January 28th. We expanded our collection to include more AV materials in response to English department requests, as well as two more titles for the school’s professional library. Finally, we held a farewell party for Mrs. Byrne on the last Friday in January. After serving as media assistant since HHS opened its doors, Mrs. Byrne will be missed! The media center remains committed to providing outstanding service to its patrons through this time of change and transition.
