Word Clouds

Word clouds are not only beautiful; they can also be educational!

Here are 3 of my favorite word cloud generators:
Wordle (the easiest to use!)
Tagxedo (word clouds can customized into shapes and saved as .jpg files)
Tagul (requires free sign up, but worth the extra step for the cool rollover features)

Back to School with Word Clouds:
1. Create Wordle Art by having each student make a poster of his or her favorite things. (These look great on Back-to-School bulletin boards!)

2. Ask students to brainstorm a list of terms associated with an introductory unit or topic they will be studying at the beginning of the year, and create a word cloud using those words.

3. Start the year with character! (Character education, that is.) Have students design wordles to reflect their positive character traits and rank them in order of importance. Or use wordles to analyze character traits from books read over the summer.

4. Find out what ideas are most important in a famous speech to kick off the new school year.

5. Create a word cloud to show concepts you will be studying this year. Show it on your SMARTBoard for back-to-school night, or embed into your class webpage or blog.

Tips for Wordle:

1. Enter text (by pasting the words, copying a link, or using tags) and go!

2. Change the font, layout, or color of your wordle with one click.

3. Try “Advanced” to give weights to your words so that certain ones will be more prominently featured.

4. Use the tilde symbol (~) between words/phrases you’d like to glue together in your word cloud: Huntingtown~High~School.

5. Save a Wordle by taking a screenshot. Use the PrintScreen key and paste (Ctl-V) into Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher.
